To avoid a proliferation of styles, inappropriate contents, and duplication of material already provided by the Society's official home page, we have developed the following policy which has been reviewed by our the IESNA attorney. Please contact the IESNA if you have questions.

If you are planning to develop a home page, and even if you already have one, you must submit the Internet Presence Request Form with the address for your site so that we may review its contents.

Please take a look at the Society's online service. We have a list of all the Sections online, with the name of the President as the key contact person, so that anyone browsing the Internet with an interest in joining IESNA will know how to find a Section for local participation. Committees are also listed with scope statements.

We want to do it as well as possible right from the beginning and encourage you to work with us to better serve our present membership as well as attract new members.

IESNA Policy on Society Internet Presence Structure and Implementation

General

Sections are governed by IESNA bylaws, Board policies, Section bylaws, and the IESNA Section Guide. Committees operate under the Policies and Committees Re: IESNA Committees. These various policies, by-laws and guides are written in conformance with '501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code, which governs organizations such as IESNA which have an education, scientific or charitable purpose. The basic proscriptions and prohibitions of '501(c)3 are applicable to all communications sent out under the auspices of the IESNA, including all Internet communications. Due to recent interest expressed by various Sections and Committees in establishing home page sites on the Internet, the following Policy has been developed as a guide specific to this new and developing medium. In short, however, Internet home pages should follow the practices in place for the publication of Section Newsletters. Thus, activities such as programs dealing with the profession in a trade or commercial sense (e.g., placement or referral services remain prohibited as being beyond the scope of IESNA's 501(c)3 purposes.

In addition to the policies and procedures which govern Section and Committee operation, IESNA has developed the following policies on establishing an Internet World Wide Web (WWW) presence. These policies and procedures will provide the necessary uniform approach regarding structure and practice expected and required of a professional organization. It is important that user access be to the home page of the international organization and not to a multitude of listings developed by the Society's constituent parts.

Development of Home Pages

Section, Committee and any other Individual home pages shall be developed in accordance with this policy and shall be submitted to Brigitte Houngbedji, IESNA Coordinator of Internet Services, for approval at least three weeks before being placed online. (See Internet Presence Request Form) IESNA staff will review the material to be sure that the Society is always presented in the best possible way and that all material is appropriate and not in conflict with the Society's mission in general and any specific IESNA policies.

Home page domain. The Illuminating Engineering Society is the only entity which may use the trademarks "IESNA" or "IES" as its domain name. The Society will permit Sections/Committees to incorporate those marks in their own domain names as set forth immediately below. All Society groups must use the specific Section/Committee name as an identifier. No Section/Committee may register a domain name without IESNA Office approval.

The proper Section/Committee identification shall be used with the IESNA logo; for example, a Section page must state:

The Home Page for the XXXXX Section of the Illuminating Engineering Society
and not
The Illuminating Engineering Society-XXXXX Section

Similarly, a Committee home page must use

XXXXX Committee of the Illuminating Engineering Society

Home page contents. Home pages should include information that is specific to the work of the Section/Committee and not duplicate subject areas and information contained on the Society's home page.

The Section/Committee home page may be as simple or elaborate as the group wishes.

Home pages shall not contain any advertising endorsements.

Committee documents under development may not be accessed online except through the Society's home page Committee Area and with the approval of the responsible Vice President and Director of Educational and Technical Development. Documents for public review will be announced and offered through the Society's home page.

Should a Section violate Society policy and guidelines, the Society has the right to remove, or request removal of that group's home page. The appropriate Section President and Regional Vice President, or Committee Chair and program Vice President, will be so notified by the IESNA Office.

Home page development. Should a Section/Committee wish to develop a home page, the Society encourages it to contact Brigitte Houngbedji, IESNA Coordinator of Internet Services, for service guidance.

Home page administration. The Section/Committee shall appoint a member to be responsible for the oversight and maintenance of information on its home page. The name shall be recorded with the IESNA office when the material is initially submitted for approval, and any change of responsibility shall also be submitted.

The Society's Office will periodically review the material for accuracy and currency and the Section/Committee shall reaffirm its request for page presence at six month intervals from the date of first submission.

The Section/Committee shall be responsible for all costs associated with the establishment of a home page as well as all costs for maintenance.
